The school buses started their daily routes this past week here in my neighborhood and people are posting their children’s first day of school pics on their social media pages. Summer is ending, school is beginning and I’M NOT READY!
I’m not ready to see the first day of school pics, the buses, the back-to-school commercials. It feels like the kiddos just got out of school. I don’t have school-age children but I get a little bit of anxiety and excitement for the kids, although I wish they had a bit of a longer summer break. When I was going to school summer started just before Memorial Day weekend and ended the day after Labor Day. Now, I think it’s just mid June to mid August. Ugh.
I would love going shopping for new school supplies and clothes. I remember my favorite lunch box being Holly Hobby. And, this one year I got a pair of knock-off Nike Cortez tennis shoes. My parents would not buy me the real ones…not happening! Well, I wore them the first day, thinking I was all that, and I got through the entire day without getting them dirty! Success! As I was getting off the bus at the end of the day, I stepped onto the ground and it was very “”muddy”. Well, it wasn’t mud. My street had been repaved that day and the bus driver dropped us off right in the middle of the wet tar! My shoes were ruined! I was so upset. What made it worse – I couldn’t get them replaced….Why? The store no longer carried them.

My anxiety for the kids going back to school comes from my own girls having to start so many different schools since I was in the Air Force and we moved around so frequently. I was both excited and anxious because I really wanted them to like their new school and make lots of friends. They didn’t have the constant set of friends that most have growing up. I wanted them to like their teachers and their classes. Everything was always so different which was a blessing and also a curse. They were introduced to lots of different things but they lacked the consistency that one school district brings. The way schools did their school pictures were completely different. I remember we got pushed through like cattle and you just hoped for the best! Nowadays they get photo shoots like they’re runway models! And – can we talk about PE?!?!?!? Who remembers going to PE and when you saw the scooters out you were both excited and terrified at the same time?! This is because you knew you’d get to push the kid you didn’t like off the scooter but also – you knew your fingers would hurt for days because you’d get them pinched 1,000 times?! You didn’t care though – your nemesis was going down!

Whether you have kiddos going to school or this post made you reminisce about your own school days, just know that there is someone out there both excited and anxious for your kiddos, hoping they have glamour shot-style school pics, that they make tons of friends and that they are the ones pushing the bullies off of the scooters! Now – I am going to go put on my Nike Cortez (cuz you know as an adult I bought me a pair), spray my hair with tons of Aqua-Net and play 80s hairbands all night!

Until next time…xoxo
Tracy
