I was excited about “starting over” in The City of Angels with my two daughters. After being in the military for over 20 years, and then working in civil service with the military, I felt it was time to see what else was out there. My excitement turned to discouragement rather quickly. Having years (2 decades) of extensive training, teamwork building, executive-level leadership experience, combined with being in your late 40s (apparently ancient-old here in LA) only qualifies you for a sales position. Or – it intimidates the bejesus out of the individual interviewing you. I’ve been told during multiple interviews that I could be the interviewers supervisor. What?!?! Who says that?! I don’t want to be the supervisor. I’m at a place in my life where I just want to do an honest days, job, contribute to the success of the business, and go home! Well, clearly I’m doing that wrong too. Surprise!
Well, I had an interview and my youngest, Madison, wanted to ride along. She said she’d wait in the car as I was scheduled for a 20-minute interview. Before I got out of the car, I asked Madison if she wanted the keys or if she wanted to leave the car running. She said no and that she’d be fine. My interview went really well and my 20 minutes ended up being a little over one hour. When I got outside, Madison was waving frantically at me. I couldn’t really see her through the tented windows but I thought maybe she was excited about an audition or something like that. When I opened the door, she said, “Oh my God, mom! Turn on the air conditioner, please! I’m dieing!” I looked at her and she was drenched with sweat. Everything from her hair, clothes, to her legs were soaked. I asked her why she didn’t open the door and get out of the car. She said she was afraid that if she opened the door, the alarm would go off and she didn’t want to hurt my chances of getting the job. I just looked at her and started cracking up. This 17-year old dork sat, sweating her ass off in the car, just hoping I’d come out! She was texting her sister, panicing, asking for advice. The girl is nuts! But, whenever the stress of job-hunting gets to me, I have the best daughters in the world to make me laugh. Take a look………..
